On Tuesday 31 March, WhatsApp finally announced their WhatsApp Call feature. From today, Android users have the possibility to make phone calls via their WhatsApp Application. Unfortunately, iPhone, Windows Phone and Blackberry users have to wait a few weeks before they can make calls via WhatsApp. The WhatsApp Call option will be later available for these operating systems. But what about the costs of WhatsApp? Is this really free like many people say? And is it better or cheaper than making “regular” phone calls? In this post we will tell you everything you need to know about the costs of WhatsApp Calling. Yesterday, we already wrote about the first impression of WhatsApp Calling.
Is WhatsApp Calling free?
Just after the release of the call feature for Android, people wondered about whether this service is completely free or not. Good question, is WhatsApp Calling really free to use? There is not one solution for this question. It depends on how you are connected to the internet. When you are connected via WiFi, you can call completely free. However, are you connected via a 3G or 4G connection? In that case you consume data of your mobile phone subscription. Making WhatsApp calls via 3G or 4G is not completely free. You basically use data which you have to pay.

When you are connected to a WiFi network, you can always make free Calls using WhatsApp.
What are the costs of the WhatsApp Call feature?
As we just mentioned, when you are connected to a WiFi network, you can make free calls using WhatsApp. This can be your WiFi network at home, but also a WiFi network at your work or at any other public location. Once you use the Calling function over a 3G or 4G connection, it is not free because you consume mobile data. The costs of WhatsApp Calling are about 1MB for every 4 minutes that you are calling. So when you have a long phone call of about 40 minutes, it costs 10MB of your data. It is useful to take a look at your individual mobile internet subscription. How many MB’s can i spend per month? Let’s say you have a large internet bundle of 4GB or more, than you can make lots of WhatsApp calls without worrying that it costs you a lot of money. But do you have only 500MB data or less? Then we recommend to be carefully with WhatsApp calls over 3G or 4G.
Some people wonder whether WhatsApp calling is free when one person is on WiFi and the other one on 4G. In that case, the person that uses 4G consumes mobile data. So, it is not the case that if one person uses WiFi, that both users can make free calls.
