When you are using WhatsApp, and you want to send a link to Telegram, you may have noticed it: WhatsApp blocks these outgoing links to the competing messaging App Telegram. Normally, when you send a link to one of your contacts via WhatsApp (e.g. youtube.com, or twitter.com), you will see a blue link with a preview of thew website. But this does not happen with Telegram links. When you send a link to the Telgeram home page (e.g. Telegram.org) or a Telegram Profile (e.g. Telegram.me/Johnjohnson) you will only see the text. You won’t see a blue link and you won’t see a preview of the page. This means you can’t directly visit this link via the WhatsApp application. Quite disappointing for people that use both WhatsApp and Telegram.
It is not the first time that we see Facebook, the owner of WhatsApp, blocks links to certain websites. Earlier, we saw WhatsApp censoring Torrent websites like The Pirate Bay. The company from Silicon Valley received a lot of criticism because these links to Torrent Websites were not working. Facebook stated that these blocked links were caused by their “intelligent filtering system”. For the record: this is the first time that WhatsApp itself censors links. In the image you can find an example of how the links are blocked.
What do you think of this dubious decision of WhatsApp? Can you, as such a dominant messaging service, censor certain links? We would like to hear your opinion on this topic!
